Which One to Choose?

Cloud — if:

  • You don't work with particularly sensitive data (e.g., not healthcare, not finance)
  • Speed and model quality are important
  • DPA-based data protection is acceptable
  • Small or medium-sized enterprise

Hybrid — if:

  • There are sensitive areas (e.g., financial data with local model, customer communication with cloud LLM)
  • You're planning a gradual transition
  • Most tasks need the cloud, but for certain operations full data control is important

On-premise — if:

  • Regulatory requirement (healthcare, finance, defense sector)
  • Corporate policy prohibits sharing data with third parties
  • You have IT capacity for GPU server operations
  • Weaker model quality is acceptable (though the gap is closing fast — Llama 3.3, Mistral Large, and Qwen 2.5 generation models are approaching cloud models)

Security Checklist for Leaders

Before Deployment

  • Risk classification: What AI Act category does the planned application fall into?
  • DPA with LLM provider: Is there a valid Data Processing Agreement?
  • Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA): Is it required? If so, has it been completed?
  • Security architecture plan: Tenant isolation, encryption, access control documented?
  • Approval matrix: Which AI operations are automatic, which require approval?

During Operations

  • Audit log active: Is every AI action logged and searchable?
  • Rate limiting configured: Per-user and global API limits?
  • Monitoring dashboard: AI response time, error rate, cost tracked?
  • Prompt injection protection: Input filtering and output validation active?
  • Incident response plan: What happens if there's a security incident?

Regular Review (Quarterly)

  • Access rights review: Does everyone have only the minimum necessary permissions?
  • Connector audit: Checking active OAuth tokens — is there unnecessary access?
  • AI response quality measurement: Hallucination rate, source attribution accuracy?
  • Regulatory updates: Has the AI Act or GDPR interpretation changed?
  • Penetration test: Testing AI-specific attack vectors (prompt injection, data exfiltration)?

  1. Security doesn't slow innovation — it enables it. Customers won't entrust data to a company that doesn't take security seriously. In AI adoption, the security framework is the foundation of trust.

  2. There's no "perfect security" — there's "managed risk." The goal is not zero risk (which is impossible), but the conscious identification, reduction, and monitoring of risks.

  3. GDPR and the AI Act are not enemies — they're guides. These regulations force us to design better: data minimization, transparency, human oversight — all of which are characteristics of better systems anyway.

  4. Human-in-the-loop is not a compromise — it's a design pattern. AI prepares, recommends, automates. Humans approve, decide, oversee. This division of labor is the best we can build today.

  5. A secure AI system is cheaper than a security incident. A data protection incident's GDPR fine is 4% of global annual revenue or EUR 20 million (whichever is higher). Security infrastructure is a fraction of that cost.

The question is not whether to use AI in enterprise operations — the question is within what security framework.
